Deepika Padukone’s remarks on Rajini’s “Raana” should be taken in context. In a recent press interview the actress expressed her frank distaste and irritation at the umpteen postponements (of the film) and the resultant havoc that they were causing to her dates for her other movie commitments. She said that she found it surprising that these postponements were caused by well known names – perhaps referring to Rajini himself!
The Kollywood press in particular and the southern cinema press in general, predictably blew steam and said the young actress is speaking above her stage. But from Deepika’s perspective the story is rather straight and simple. She gave a bunch of dates and they for whatever reason were not utilized not once but twice. And she said it like she felt it. Many in the southern industry are yet to cone to terms with new age stardom in Bollywood. Unlike yesteryear heroines, starlets like Deepika did not have to wait for long to achieve fame. If anything Deepika was already a name to reckon with in the modeling field when she acted in OSO.
The shahrukh starrer simply ensured that she rocketed from “well-known” to “how can you not know Deepika”. Despite numerous pressures the actress is sticking to her remarks and has apparently said that she, in the first place, regrets signing that film.
